5 Signs Your Home May Need Electrical Repair

Do light bulbs in your home “pop” for no apparent reason? Do you frequently blow circuit breakers, causing the electric power in a certain part of your home to shut down? Do outlets or switches in your home die with no obvious cause? These are all signs your home needs electrical repair to bring your electric systems up to date and reduce the risk of fire or even electrocution.

Not all electric problems are dangerous, however. Some are merely inconvenient. A certified Winston-Salem electrician can tell the difference, and fix your problems so you can live without worries or inconvenience. Here are some signs you need electrical repair services.

Circuit Breakers That Keep Tripping

If the power goes out in your home, either in one area or across the whole house, you may have tripped circuit breakers. First, unplug or turn off any electronic or motor-driven appliances, especially computers and HDTV sets. This will prevent any power surges from damaging appliances when the power comes back on. Then reset the tripped circuit breakers in your fuse box. If the breakers immediately trip again, call an electrician. Placing anything inside a tripped circuit to keep it on can cause an electrical fire.

If you have circuit breakers that trip frequently, you may be using too many volts on that line, or your electrical systems may be old and require an upgrade. Call Gwyn Services for troubleshooting and electrical repair services.

Appliances That Spark When You Plug Them In

A spark upon plugging in an appliance can be very dangerous, since it can cause an electrical fire. Never attempt to put out an electrical fire with water – this will only make it worse. Every home should have at least one fire extinguisher to put out fires. If you cannot put out the fire, get everyone out of your home immediately and call the fire department.

If the appliance is smoking but not burning, cut power to the outlet via a wall switch, turn off the circuit breaker connected to that outlet, or unplug the appliance by pulling on the cord. Do not touch the plug, as it could be hot.

If you think the problem is with the appliance, and not the outlet, test it by plugging in an appliance that you know works. Use an inexpensive, uncomplicated device like a toaster or a lamp. Don’t plug your laptop or even your $200 electronic coffeemaker into an outlet that could be faulty. If you discover the outlet is bad, cut off power to that outlet and call an electrician for electrical repairs.

Outlets and Switches That Don’t Work

Every so often, an outlet or switch will go bad due to age and wear-and-tear. As far as electrical repair goes, replacing an outlet or switch is easier than many tasks. But that doesn’t mean you should try to do it yourself, if you aren’t comfortable with all the steps it takes to do it safely and successfully.

If outlets and switches are constantly dying in your home, you may need an electrical upgrade rather than electrical repair services.
