Electric Vehicle Home Charging

Installing a Level 2 Charging System is typically a one-day job, which requires installation of a higher voltage (208-240v) circuit similar to your clothes dryer or cooking range.  This is a jor for a professional that can typically be completed in one day.   The prie for installation typically ranges between $900 and $1700 depending on the location of the charger and your home's current electrical capacity/wiring.  

A Level 1 Charger is a small 15-amp charger (usually included with the purchase of your vehicle) that can plug into a standard outlet.  This type of charger is typically very slow, and can take upwards of 50-60 hours to fully charge your vehicle.  Charging your vehicle on this type of connection can also easily overtax your electrical circuits, resulting in frequent breaker or fuse shutoffs.  Level 1 chargers are typically best for emergency or travel use.  

A Level 2 Charger is a 40-50 amp charger that requires a higher voltage circuit.  It is typically hardwired into a home or office and used for routine charging.  In general, a Level 2 charger can fully charge a standard EV in 6-8 hours.  This is the level charger that is standard practice to install in a home charging situation.  

A Level 3 Charger can alo be known as a supercharger, and it requires enhanced electrical capabilities.  It is most often used in commercial/indstrial capacities and is able to charge an EV in around 30 minutes.  

The Society of Automotive Engineers has created an uniform standard for Level 1 and Level 2 charging.  Virtually all electric cars comply with this standard.  While a few EV models have their own connection configuration (think about an iPhone power cord versus an Android), all EV charging cords can be fitted with adapters that can allow the charger to connect with your individual car's needs.  The easiest way to determine what works for you is to consult your car manual.  

Your EV Charging Station needs to be installed on a permanent structure, most commonly in a garage or driveway parking space.  According to code, the charging station needs to be wired into your circuit breaker and must be installed 36-48" above the ground, with an unobstructed wall area surrounding it.  The charging cord must be able to reach your parked car's charging outlet, and the cord may not post a trip hazard if crossing typical walkways.  

An EV Charging Station may be installed inside, or outdoors, as long as there is a permanent structure to adhere to.  This can include installing a post in front of an outdoor parking spot, or mounting a charger to the exterior wall of a carport or home.  The charger must be hardwired into a circuit breaker, and the charging cord must be able to reach the EV's charging port.  

Charging an electric vehicle typically uses a similar amount of power as using many home appliances.  Most electric vehicles charging with a Level Two charger will draw about 7,200 watts.  To compare, a typical furnace runs at about 10,000 watts, and a modern water heater uses 4,500 watts.
